Time-Frequency Masking
The perception of one sound can be affected by the presence of another sound. This effect is due to the masking properties of the ear. These particularities are exploited in perceptual audio coding, in which only auditory masking in the frequency domain (simultaneous masking) is generally taken into account. Here new data describing the time-frequency spread of masking for a Gaussian atom as a function of masker level are presented.
